I’d love to dig a bit deeper into this topic, but I don’t want to be out of my depth 😅 do you have any recommendations? If not it’s okay! Your writing on this aspect of life just struck a chord in my heart. I’m a Reformed Christian, if that helps for even 1 recommendation! 🙂

Let's see... there's good volumes of Herbert's poetry out there, but the one I have (strangely enough) doesn't have 'Love Unknown.' For more devotional poetry 'The Temple' is his big collection.

Henri Nouwen's 'Life of the Beloved' and 'The Inner Voice of Love' both offer a thoughtful take on this. (He wasn't reformed and is kind of a complicated figure... a Dutch-Catholic professor-social activist).

Not sure where you stand on Tim Keller, but I'd recommend his old sermons at Redeemer Presbyterian (look up the podcast 'Gospel in Life'). He has an insightful way of talking about the Gospel and bridging it to longing, loss, and self-understanding.

Happy reading!

Wow, thank you so much! I appreciate your time and thoughtfulness in responding; this is so much more than I expected!. Looking forward to reading these, and listening to Keller 🙂

Have a blessed day, brother!

Hey, if barging in with a recommendation is alright: large swaths of “The Valley of Vision” describe and seek a Herbert-like sanctification from the Lord. The book is a collection of Puritan prayers in their older style, which mix poetic syntax with spiritual desperation.

Most welcome!

Thanks for recommending, and yes, 'The Valley of Vision' is a great one for sanctification. Puritans really knew how to pour a heart out to God : )
